How to choose the best Collagen supplement for you - 3 Things you must know!

How to choose the best collagen supplement

At this point, we all know that The 5 Minute Kit is the best thing you can use to take care of all your collagen needs, topically. But you can also give them a boost internally with collagen supplements.

When I introduced one into my routine a few years ago, I documented all my findings in a blog. And to this day, it’s still one of the most-read posts on our website. However, it also generates a lot of questions about how to find the perfect supplement for you.

So, here’s 3 things you need to look out for when shopping for collagen supplements...

1. Make sure you don’t pee it out!

Not that long ago, collagen supplements were almost completely useless. This is because the molecules were too big to be absorbed by the body and therefore, we’d just pee it out (I tried to find a way to put that more politely, but that’s exactly how it was explained to me! 😂). In recent years though, technology has developed massively and there’s now a technique called ‘hydrolysis’.

This breaks collagen into tiny fragments called peptides (those magical, rejuvenating components also found in your Miracle Eye Complex and Super Youth Serum), that are easily absorbed. This technique is what’s responsible for delivering all the youth-boosting benefits these marvellous powders and potions are now renowned for. So always look for a hydrolysed formula.

2. Consider the source...

Collagen supplements currently come from 3 main sources - Bovine, marine and vegan alternatives, where each have their pros and cons.

The bovine form for example contains collagen types 1 & 3. Type 1 is responsible for maintaining healthy skin, hair and nails and type 3 supports your muscles, arteries and organs. However, it arguably isn’t the most sustainable source and doesn’t comply with all religious guidelines.

Marine collagen on the other hand is perhaps kinder to the planet but only contains collagen type 1. With that being said, it’s the purest type 1 you can get your hands on and is more easily absorbed, delivering faster results.

The last option is of course the vegan alternatives. It’s worth noting that these supplements aren’t actually collagen molecules, but instead, minerals and vitamins that will support your own natural production. A great alternative if you choose to avoid all animal products.

3. The cleaner the better...

As with all of the above, choosing the perfect collagen supplement for you comes down to personal preference. And as an Aesthetician, one of my preferences is that the collagen is as clean as possible.

What I mean by this is that is doesn’t contain any ingredients that don’t really need to be there. Just as I refuse to add unnecessary components such as fragrance, parabens and sulphates to BASE, I don’t like flavourings or sweeteners in my supplements either.

Many brands will add them to make their products more palatable - Which can be a great place to start if you’re a newbie! But if you can, search for 100% pure collagen and not only will it give you the best results, but you’ll get the most bang for your buck too.

I hope this little guide enables you to make the best collagen-boosting decisions for your body, internally. And please know that we’ll always be at the top of our game when it comes to increasing your levels topically too.
