Does your skin really need an LED Face Mask?
Every week on Instagram, I run an ‘Ask Amy’ segment where you can send me all your skincare questions. I absolutely love it because not only do I get to help, but I also learn so much about what’s on your mind when it comes to skincare.
Some topics pop up time and time again (and for good reason!), but there’s one question I get asked so often that I felt it deserved its own dedicated blog post.
So, let’s talk about the curious creature that is the LED Face Mask…
What Is an LED Face Mask?
LED face masks might look like something straight out of Doctor Who, with their futuristic red lights beaming across the face. But funnily enough, their origins are even cooler. They were originally developed by NASA in the late 1990s to help astronauts heal wounds in space!
By the early 2000s, dermatologists adapted the technology for in-clinic skin treatments, and in recent years, LED masks have become available for at-home use. The trend really took off when celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham, and Kate Hudson started sharing their love for LED therapy on social media.
But do these high-tech masks actually work? And more importantly, do you need one in your life?
How Do LED Face Masks Work?
LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, which means these masks use light therapy to heal and rejuvenate the skin. There are different types of LED light, but the most popular for anti-ageing is red light therapy.
Red light works by penetrating the skin and energising your cells so they repair and regenerate faster. It also stimulates fibroblast cells, which are responsible for producing collagen and elastin - the two key proteins that keep skin firm, smooth, and youthful.
But here’s the catch...Not all LED masks are created equal. If you’re considering one, it’s crucial to choose a reputable brand, like CurrentBody, to ensure you’re getting real results.
LED Masks vs. Other Collagen-Boosting Tools
So, are LED masks worth the investment? Well, it depends on what you’re looking for.
✅ If your goal is long-term skin maintenance - LED masks can help keep your skin healthy and glowing.
❌ If you want to reduce deep wrinkles, enlarged pores, or acne scars, you’ll see much quicker and more dramatic results with a collagen-stimulating tool like the TLC Roller.
The TLC Roller works deeper and faster, significantly improving skin texture, while LED therapy is much gentler and slower. That’s why I always say LED masks are a ‘nice-to-have’ rather than a ‘need-to-have’.
However, there is one area where LED masks truly shine…
Who Can Benefit Most From LED Therapy?
If you have a skin condition like rosacea, acne, eczema, or psoriasis, where needling isn’t an option, then LED therapy can be a fantastic alternative.
LED masks also require zero effort. You can simply pop one on, sit back, and let it do its thing while you relax or scroll on your phone. The only downside? They aren’t cheap. But the silver lining is that it’s a one-time purchase that can last for years.
My Honest Take on LED Face Masks
I’ve always used LED therapy in my clinic for its incredible healing benefits, and I even own an LED mask myself. But if I’m being completely honest? I can’t remember the last time I actually used it!
When it comes to skin ageing and collagen production, the active ingredients in your 5 Minute Kit combined with TLC-Rollering twice a week will always have the biggest impact.
But if you have the budget for an extra skincare gadget, or if you’re a bit of a beauty nerd like me, then LED is a lovely add-on to your routine, just know that it’s not essential 🥰
Final Thoughts: Should You Buy an LED Face Mask?
If you:
✅ Want to maintain skin health and support gentle rejuvenation
✅ Have a skin condition that prevents you from using other collagen-boosting treatments
✅ Love techy beauty gadgets and are happy to invest in one
Then an LED face mask could be a great addition to your skincare routine!
However, if you’re looking for visible, fast results, you’ll get far more bang for your buck with a collagen-stimulating tool like the TLC Roller.
At the end of the day, skincare should be simple and effective, and you don’t need fancy gadgets to achieve incredible skin confidence. Focus on what truly works and everything else is just a bonus 💛
